Knoxville, Tenn. (December 1, 2008) – Professor Frank von Hippel, former White House assistant for National Security, will discuss the Global Nuclear Partnership (GNEP), 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3. To be held at the University Center Auditorium at UTK, Mr. Hippel will respond to issues surrounding the Bush administration initiative.

Under GNEP, the U.S. and its nuclear partners would sell power reactors to developing nations who agree not to pursue technologies that would aid nuclear weapons production, notably reprocessing and uranium enrichment. As a part of the deal the U.S. agrees to take highly radioactive spent fuel rods from foreign reactors for recycling here. Specifically, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, requiring the waste to be transported in, around and through the Tennessee River Valley.

Professor von Hippel is a professor of Public and International Affairs and the former co-director of the Program on Science and Global Security at Princeton University. He is also co-chair of the International Panel on Fissile Materials. A former assistant director for national security in the White House Office of Science and Technology, Dr. von Hippel’s areas of policy research include nuclear arms control and nonproliferation, energy, and checks and balances in policymaking for technology. # # # Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is a nonprofit organization thatpromotes responsible energy choices that create global warmingsolutions and ensure clean, safe, and healthy communities throughoutthe Southeast.
