Progress Energy of Florida and Florida Power & Light each want to build two costly new nuclear reactors in Florida. The utilities have asked the FL PSC to approve early recovery of costs, which could raise your electric bill before the reactors even produce electricity, if they are ever even built. The PSC will vote on October 16, 2009.

Ultimately due to legislation passed by the Florida Assembly in 2006 encouraging development in nuclear power, FPL and Progress in March 2009 asked the FL PSC to approve nearly a half a billion dollars in early recovery of costs associated with building these four new nuclear reactors. The Office of Public Counsel, the Florida Industrial Power Users Group, White Springs Agricultural Chemicals, Inc./PCS Phosphate – White Springs, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and the Federal Executive Agencies all intervened in this docket and raised serious concerns.
