ADVISORY: Nuclear crisis updates and analysis
WASHINGTON, D.C.///NEWS ADVISORY///A news media briefing will take place by phone at 1:30 p.m. EST/1830 GMT by four leading nuclear experts in response to the nuclear reactor crisis in Japan. The experts will provide analysis of the latest news coming out of Japan, including a second reactor building explosion, new reports of problems at Fukushima reactor #2, aircraft carrier repositioning, and questions about the safety of spent fuel pools, as well as implications for potential future reactor construction in the U.S.
News event speakers will be:
- Robert Alvarez, senior scholar, Institute for Policy Studies, where he focuses on nuclear disarmament and environmental and energy policies, and former senior policy advisor at the Department of Energy, where he coordinated the effort to enact nuclear worker compensation legislation.
- Arjun Makhijani, Ph.D., president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research. Makhijani has a doctorate in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, where he specialized in nuclear fusion.
- Damon Moglen, director of the climate and energy project at Friends of the Earth. Moglen has expertise on nuclear issues and the nuclear industry in Japan. For more than a decade, Moglen ran Greenpeace International’s plutonium campaign, including more than a year spent inside Japan focused on nuclear issues.
- Aileen Mioko Smith, director of Green Action, Kyoto, Japan. Mioko Smith has been a leading critic of nuclear power in Japan for 30 years and is maintaining close contact with Japanese colleagues during a visit to San Francisco.
