SACE | Southern Alliance for Clean Energy
Say Yes to Clean Energy and No to Nukes in S. Fla!
WHAT: Florida Power & Light has applied to build two more nuclear reactors in South Florida – in addition to the two aging reactors at Turkey Point. Join us and ally organizations for a clean energy rally from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30th in Homestead, FL.
Now is your chance to oppose the proposed $20+ billion expansion of Turkey Point, which is only 24 miles south of Miami, and advocate for clean, safe and affordable energy choices. WHERE: The rally will be at Homestead Bayfront Park: 9698 SW 328th Street (N Canal Drive) Homestead, FL 33033. Turkey Point is viewable from this location, just 1.5 miles south across Biscayne Bay. Free parking is available; just tell the tollbooth worker you are attending the rally. WHEN:
- 9:00-10:00 a.m.: Kayakers will be out in the water putting on a mock evacuation drill (kayakers are very welcome so bring your kayaks – there are good places to launch – and miles of mangroves to explore after the event)
- 10:00-11:30 a.m.: Rally, speakers, entertainment and press conference (on land). Bring your signs, costumes and smiles.
- Community potluck will follow at a large shelter rented for the day. Please feel free to bring food. In the event of rain, we will use the shelter for the rally, so please attend rain or shine
WHY: With the events still unfolding in Japan at the severely damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster (April 26, 1986), we know that however unlikely, nuclear accidents can and do happen. The risks to our community, economy and environment are far too great. Instead, safe, clean energy choices such as energy efficiency and especially solar, a resource south Florida has in abundance, are already available.
