Tell BOEM: Bring Offshore Wind to Georgia!

Offshore wind is one of the biggest clean energy opportunities for Georgia and the Atlantic cost of the U.S. You have the opportunity to tell the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to bring offshore wind to Georgia!

Georgia’s coast could support 14.5 gigawatts of offshore wind–or enough to provide for about one-third of Georgia’s power demand. In order to bring this power home, adequate research must be done to ensure wind farms’ feasibility. Southern Company applied for a lease to set up a meteorological buoy approximately 3 – 11 nautical miles off the coast of Tybee Island to measure wind speed, direction and shear, and potentially collect other environmental data. BOEM has responded by issuing a notice of intent to begin an environmental assessment–one of the steps in the process of allowing the research equipment to go out to sea.

BOEM is now accepting public comments on this proposal until January 14, 2013.

Pleasego here now and tell BOEM to bring offshore wind to Georgia.
