Asheville Progress Energy Rate Hike Hearing

On March 5th, the Utilities Commission will be holding a public hearing on Progress Energy’s rate hikes. The Commissioners will be present to hear public comments on Progress Energy’s request for a 14% rate hike for residential customers, and 9% for commercial and industrial users. They are raising our rates to pay for extending the lifeline of coal and gas in North Carolina. Instead, it should invest heavily in energy efficiency and renewable energy, which would cost less in the long run and protect human health and the environment. We should not be asked to pay rates we can’t afford, to fund the burning of fossil fuels that harm our environment and our communities. All citizens are urged to join us in speaking out for a clean energy future and calling on the Utilities Commission to reject the rate hikes.
