Charleston, S.C. (April 12, 2013) – SACE Coastal Climate and Energy Coordinator, Chris Carnevale, issued this statement regarding the recent release of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) report on the impacts of climate change on South Carolina’s natural resources: “We welcome the release of this long-anticipated report and agree with the conclusion that adapting to a changing climate will be key to preserving our quality of life in the Southeast. “Sea level rise, drought, floods, and extreme weather are all happening as a result of climate change and each of these impacts are already hurting South Carolinians. On the other hand, there are opportunities for strong leadership from our public officials. Adaptive measures can counter climate change’s negative impacts while bolstering our economy by ensuring that hundreds of thousands of natural resource and coastal tourism based jobs are protected from the impacts of climate change. The sooner we act to abate these problems, the better off we will all be. “Public comments on the report can be submitted until May 24 by visiting https://www.dnr.sc.gov/lwc/climatereport.html. We urge concerned citizens to review the report and submit comments. # # # Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible energy choices that create global warming solutions and ensure clean, safe, and healthy communities throughout the Southeast.
