SACE | Southern Alliance for Clean Energy
The Costs of Importing Coal and Relying on Coal-Fired Energy
The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) continues its webinar series with a presentation on two Union of Concerned Scientists’ (UCS) reports covering coal issues in the Southeast. These webinars are your opportunity to learn about emerging clean energy technologies, opportunities and issues that SACE engages in everyday.
Experts Jeff Dyette and Rachel Cleetus, from UCS’ Climate and Energy Program, will present the webinar covering these two reports. The Burning Coal, Burning Cash report ranks states according to how much money was sent out of the state to pay for imported coal in 2012. All of our Southeastern states send significant amounts of money out of state for coal – money that could be spent on in-state clean energy projects. The Ripe for Retirement report, the second report covered in our webinar, showcases UCS’ most recent economic analysis of continued operation of coal units compared to the costs of operating alternative forms of energy generation. During the webinar, UCS will explain how many power plants in our region are still Ripe for Retirement. We hope you can join us to learn more about these important economic issues.
