Appalachian Energy Center Workshops: Distributed Wind Energy
Distributed wind energy is electricity that is produced for homes, farms, business, villages, communities, cabins and sailboats. If you’ve driven across Texas or Kansas, you’ve seen countless wind farms out there working hard, quietly making utility-scale energy. Distributed wind is different; this is wind power for the people, amongst the people.
Distributed wind energy be very rewarding – enjoy energy security by creating your own electricity; hedge against rising energy costs; become more connected to weather patterns and the rhythm of the seasons; and interact with your community by hosting curious visitors wanting to learn more about your efforts in sustainability.
Some might think that the visual impact of a wind turbine is controversial. It turns out that most over-reacting neighbors who have initially opposed a nearby wind turbine installation will visit the new turbine and remark, “Oh, that’s it? I want one too!” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but as Wendy Milne describes it in a Mother Earth News article entitled ‘Choosing Renewable Energy’, “the aesthetics of wind turbines are irresistible, and we steal a glance at ours almost every time we walk between the house, garden and workshop”.
If you are interested in making some wind power, join us for a fun and interactive workshop at Appalachian State, a world leader in distributed wind energy training, education, research and hands-on work. You will learn about a variety of distributed wind energy technologies, successful case studies, and how to choose a wind turbine system. This workshop will be held a mile high at Appalachian State University’s Small Wind Research and Demonstration Site on windy Beech Mountain, North Carolina. There will be both classroom and “hands on” activities.
