Chattanooga, Tenn. – Today at the Tennessee Valley Authority board meeting, TVA announced a power purchase agreement with NextEra Energy for 80 MW of utility scale solar to be located in northwest Alabama near TVA’s retiring Colbert fossil plant.
In response to today’s announcement, Dr. Stephen A. Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy made this statement:
“The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy applauds TVA for engaging in this contract and looks forward to its successful completion. Solar is an important resource for our region’s economic and job growth and it needs to be more fully incorporated into TVA’s system.
Alabama has tremendous solar potential, and we welcome this positive development given other generation changes by TVA. We believe there are many more opportunities where solar could and should be developed in Alabama as neighboring states are significantly ahead in solar development.”
