Public Hearings: Gulf Power Rate Hike

Gulf Power Co. has proposed a dramatic rate increase that would penalize customers who conserve energy and invest in solar energy, as well as low income residents and senior citizens who use very little electricity. Please voice your concerns at this public hearing by the Public Service Commission, which must listen to citizen input in deciding whether to approve any changes to the rates.

Gulf Power’s proposed rate structure would dramatically raise the base rate, which is the fixed amount that customers pay just to have service, regardless of whether they use any electricity or not. Families that work hard to conserve, to turn off lights and adjust their thermostat would be penalized by this rate structure. Those who add insulation to their home to help reduce their bill would also be penalized. And customers who add solar panels to further reduce their bill would be penalized even more. This totally perverse rate structure would encourage customers to use more electricity, not less. And over 90% of Gulf Power’s electricity comes from burning dirty coal and natural gas.

SACE supports electric rates that reward conservation and responsible behavior, not penalize it!
