On March 16th the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed a proposed new rule to set first ever national standards for mercury and other toxic air emissions from coal plants. The rule was officially published today. A 60-day public comment period has now begun and will remain open until July 5, 2011.
This is an extremely important rule that will protect thousands of lives and assure that all coal plants, old and new, meet important safeguards for human health and the environment. The rule will create jobs and will provide billions of dollars in benefits. To learn all the details of this rule, please be sure to read our previous blog post and our Learn About page.
