KNOXVILLE, TN — On Monday, August 11, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), Sierra Club and Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), will discuss their joint comments on the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) draft environmental assessment for the Allen coal plant in Memphis. Last month, the utility proposed replacing Allen’s coal-burning units with a new major natural gas facility without fairly considering the possible integration of clean energy alternatives, like wind energy and solar power, and other cost-effective solutions. The TVA Board of Directors is expected to make a decision on the plant’s future at its quarterly meeting on August 21 in Knoxville.

What: During this telepresser, a coalition of environmental groups will share and discuss their analysis and recently-filed comments that support replacing the Allen coal units with a combination of renewable energy generation and upgrades to the current power system, in addition to adding a smaller capacity gas plant on-site. TVA’s draft environmental assessment failed to evaluate these options, instead only looking at various combinations of gas capacity to meet the power needs in the Memphis area. The groups will explain why their proposal is the best way to satisfy the region’s energy needs in a low-cost, reliable, and environmentally-sound manner.
