Citizens Hearing on Carbon Pollution Rule
Charlotte, N.C. (June 4, 2012) – In March, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed the first-ever limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) from new fossil-fueled power plants. These standards will help to reduce carbon pollution which leads to increases in the number of bad air quality days, resulting in more asthma attacks, heat-related deaths, respiratory complications and other health threats. These health threats already have a disproportionate impact on those who are most vulnerable to poor air quality, including children, the elderly, communities of color and low-income residents here in the Southeast. EPA is currently accepting comments on this rule from the general public, but the only two official public hearings were held outside the Southeastern United States. Clean Air Carolina, Mayfield Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, St. Paul Baptist Church, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, National Council of Churches and US Climate Action Network are co-hosting a Citizens Hearing to give North Carolinians and other Southeastern residents the opportunity to voice support for carbon pollution limits and submit their comments to EPA.
