It's a sign you need to get more curious in your 1:1s! Ask more questions like, "what do you do for fun?" and "what other kinds of volunteer groups have you been a part of?" Bottom line: get curious and learn! Tell the story of this new relationship!Pro Tip:Remember, like any good story give details to put the reader 'in the room' with you! The questions below are designed to help draw out your story.Part 1: Introduce Us to your Volunteer!Give some details about who they are, how you met, what led to this first meeting together. Where they live, what they do (or did) for a living/for fun, etc. (example: John and I first met at the ActOnClimate training in Tampa. I learned John's been a part of the community for 20 years, as a school teacher raising his family. He loves taking his grandkids fishing in the swamps and decided to meet because he wants those swamps to be there for his grandkids too.Introduce us to your volunteerPart 2: What did you have in common?Take few sentences to share what you learned you shared in common. Not just your mutual support for certain issues, but what you have in common outside OFA. If you didn't learn anything about their family, what they do in their spare time, what sort of other volunteer work they've done, or find anything else you have in common, then that's a good indicator to get more curious in your 1:1s!What did you learn you have in common (outside of politics)?Example: we both have kids that went to the same school.Part 3: What Action Did They Say Yes To?Take a couple sentences to talk about next steps. What did you learn was a good ask or way to include them? Did you give them some meaningful responsibility in an upcoming day of action? Will they work with you to follow up with volunteers & invite them to the next event? Write a letter to editor? Take some time to share what you asked & they said yes to.What ask did they say yes to? What are they doing next?if you struggled with what to ask or getting to 'yes' check out the tips below. Consider making a list of all the ways someone could contribute at an upcoming event, ask teammates to brainstorm. Remember it isn't just 'asking' but really it's 'giving' opportunities" for people who want to help to find purpose!Actions they committed to take: Help me follow up with other supporters Host Neighborhood Meeting & inviting people to join Write a Letter to Editor Email Target Tweet Target / Social Share Learn how to hold better 1-on-1s, build teams and relationships:- NOI 1:1 aka Building relationships (click here)- OFA HQ 1:1 Webinar Recording (click here)- OFA HQ 1:1 Webinar Powerpoint (click here) Make your story more powerful: Add a photo!
