Stop Plant Washington
A group of Georgia Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs), called Power4Georgians, are attempting to build the first coal plant in
Georgia in 20 years. Cobb EMC leadership, which is currently under legal investigation for misuse of EMC funds, is leading the effort to build "Plant Washington". If built, the coal plant will cost more than $2 billion, use 13-16 million gallons of
water daily, and spew as much global warming pollution into the atmosphere as putting 1 million new cars on the road every year.
With dirty air and an
economic downturn already affecting Georgia, a few of the Power4Georgians member EMCs chose in 2009 to end their involvement in this risky venture. However, the threat of this coal plant in Washington County, as well as a second coal plant recently proposed in Ben Hill County, is still eminent. For more information on both plant proposals please visit the Learn About Plant Washington page of our website.

Please visit our CleanEnergy Footprints Blog to keep up-to-date on important developments with Plant Washington. Recently we featured information on how new EPA rules could further hinder the development of any new coal plants from being built in the United States. See our Blog: EPA Rules Mean Big Challenges Ahead for Dirty Coal.
March, 2010 Quick Update: The Cherokee Tribune ran an article on recently proposed by-law changes by Cobb EMC board of directors that would further inhibit EMC members from participating in coop decision making opportunities.
